Debit Card Skimming Prevention Tips

Debit card skimming activity has increased in North Texas and we are beginning to see signs of it in East Texas as well. When setting up a skimming scam, crooks attach a device to the debit and credit card scanners at ATMs, gas pumps and other merchant pay stations that “skim” and capture card information, including PINs. Crooks can then sell this data to other crooks, usually from out of state. Card information is then used by the crooks to create cards that are used to withdrawal cash and make purchases. PIN based transactions are usually non-recoverable once an account is compromised.

While the threat of these scams is real, there are steps you can take to make yourself aware and guard yourself against being a victim of skimming.

Use your debit card as credit when possible. Sign for the transaction rather than use your PIN.
Skimming devices will often fit on top of the machine’s original card scanner. If the machine or card reader look to be tampered with, do not use it.
For security purposes, BankTexas debit cart daily limits are set to $400 for cash and $750 for purchases. If you request an increase in your daily limit to make a purchase, call to confirm that your limit is lowered once your purchase is complete.
Notify the bank immediately if you see suspicious activity on your statement.
Keep your contact information with the bank up-to-date so you may be reached if suspicious activity is detected on your debit card.
Notify the bank if you plan to travel so your unusual location will not lead to your card being blocked.

Norma Oglesby Retires!

After 8 years of faithful service to BankTexas, Norma Oglesby, the Store Manager at our Holly Lake Store, is retiring! Today is her last day at BankTexas, but we celebrated her, her service to the Bank and all the good times ahead of her yesterday with a retirement party that was as fun as Norma.

The BankTexas team at the Holly Lake Store gave Norma a feather boa and snazzy purse for her to use as a retired gal!

We know you will join us in thanking Norma for her service to the BankTexas. Her co-workers all agree that working with her has been a pleasure and we know she is loved by many of her customers. If you are in the Holly Lake area today, stop by and wish Norma well! Norma, congratulations on your richly deserved retirement. You will be missed at BankTexas!

BT Holdings Adds Marshall Mitchell to Board of Directors

Juan D. Nichols, Chairman of BT Holdings, Inc., and Troy Robinson, President of BankTexas, announce today the election of Marshall Mitchell as a new director of BT Holdings and Jason Fraizer as Vice President for BankTexas’ Winnsboro Store.

A Longview native, Mitchell had a 40-year career with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) where he served as the Assistant Deputy Comptroller from 1997-2011. Other positions held in his tenure include: Field Manager, Commissioned National Bank Examiner, and Examiner-in-Charge of all size community and mid-size bank examinations. Since 2011 Mitchell has been acting as an Independent Bank Consultant, providing a wide range of services to banks that address regulation and operating challenges in the ever-changing banking environment.

“We are pleased to announce that Marshall Mitchell has joined the Board of Directors of BT Holdings. Mr. Mitchell has a long-standing career in in the banking industry with extensive experience in banking regulation,” said Juan D. Nichols. “With his experience and specialized knowledge, we are confident that Mr. Mitchell will be an important contributor to our board.”

Jason Fraizer comes to BankTexas with a wide range of business experience, including agribusiness and banking skills gained at positions with Farm Country, Inc., Guaranty Bond Bank and Keller’s Creamery. He has been serving as City President since September where he is responsible for originating loans for the Winnsboro market.

“Jason Fraizer’s strong background in both agriculture and business has been an asset to BankTexas’ customers. Wow Experience Specialist – Whitney Watson

Whitney Watson, a Universal Associate at our Quitman Store, was voted 2012′s Wow Experience Specialist by her fellow BankTexas team members for always providing customers with phenomenal customer service and a great experience at BankTexas.

Rookie of the Year- Nathan Kratzmeyer

Nathan Kratzmeyer was named 2012′s Rookie of the Year at BankTexas. Nathan began working at the Quitman Store in our IT and Bookkeeping Departments earlier in the year, diving right in to the responsibilities of his position. His hard work, helpful attitude and willingness to learn has not gone unnoticed.

Rising Star – Ashley Graves

Ashley Graves was voted 2012′s Rising Star for all of the hard work and dedication she has shown in her role in BankTexas’ Bookkeeping Department in the Quitman Store. Ashley is an example to all of us for what it means to be a team player; she is always willing to do what is needed of her.

Community Developer – Betty Carr

BankTexas is focused on serving the communities where we do business, and so is Betty Carr. Betty serves in a business development role in our Mineola Store and after hours is very involved in many organizations across Mineola, including the Lake Country Playhouse and the Kiwanis Club. It was no surprise that such a sweet person, with a heart for their community was selected for this special award.

BankTexas Names Bob Dyer CEO

Juan D. Nichols, Chairman of BT Holdings, Inc., the parent company of BankTexas, announced January 16 the election of Bob Dyer to the position of Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of BankTexas.

Dyer is a Tyler native and comes to BankTexas from Texas Bank and Trust in Longview where he has been since 1978 serving as President from 1983 to 1995 and as Vice Chairman since 1995. “Bob brings invaluable banking experience specific to East Texas,” commented Nichols. “We welcome his extensive knowledge and his leadership as we implement an aggressive business plan at BankTexas over the coming years.”

BankTexas is also welcoming Lori Sirman and Worth Jackson who have each been named Executive Vice Presidents of BankTexas for Tyler and Longview. Sirman has been with Texas Bank and Trust for four years and previously held positions in Tyler with Regions Bank and Bank One. Jackson is a native of Longview and after a period with Bank of America and a Longview community bank has been with Texas Bank and Trust since 2001.

Troy Robinson, who has served as President and CEO of BankTexas for the past 13 years, will continue his service to the organization as President and Chief Operating Officer with expanded responsibilities in the areas of bank operations.

“The past 34 years have been a wonderful experience with so many friends and customer relationships,” said Dyer. “We are very excited about the opportunity to continue serving the banking needs of East Texas as we align interests with Troy and the BankTexas staff in executing a unique business model focused on a people first culture”

IBAT Selects New Board Members During 38th Annual Convention

AUSTIN, Texas — Troy Robinson of BankTexas was elected chairman of the Independent Bankers Association of Texas (IBAT) during IBAT’s 38th Annual Convention held in Austin. The Quitman banker will serve the highest level of leadership for the nation’s largest state community banking association through 2012-2013.

Robinson,the current president and COO of BankTexas, began his banking career in 1981. Since then he has worked at BankTexas in operations, information technology and lending. He became an officer in 1984, vice president in 1989, senior vice president in 1994, and president and CEO 1998. He assumed the position of COO in 2013.

In addition to his professional achievements, Robinson is dedicated to his community. He served as mayor pro-tem of Quitman and has also been on the board of directors of the Quitman Chamber of Commerce, Quitman Public Library, Quitman Industrial Foundation and Quitman Rotary Club. In the larger East Texas region, Robinson has been a board member of the East Texas Development Corporation, East Texas Mental Health and Hochheim Prairie Mutual Insurance Company.

Other board officers named to join Robinson include Chairman-Elect Jay Gober of First State Bank in Graham, Vice Chairman John Jay of Roscoe State Bank in Roscoe and Secretary-Treasurer Rogers Pope, Jr. of Texas Bank and Trust in Longview.

Joining the board executives are newly elected members Kyle Irwin of Gruver State Bank in Gruver, Peter Bennis of Pinnacle Bank in Keene, Tommy McCulloch of Fidelity Bank in Wichita Falls, Stan Pinkham of Texas Leadership Bank in Royce City, Marvin E. Singleton III of Citizens National Bank in Waxahachie and Tom Turner of First State Bank in Abernathy.

Also presented during IBAT’s Annual Convention was the coveted IBAT Chairman’s Award. Outgoing IBAT Chairman Scott Heitkamp recognized Al Jones, chairman of American Bank in Corpus Christi, with this prestigious honor. Heitkamp noted Jones’ many contributions to IBAT, including serving as chairman from 2006-2007, during the award presentation.

Austin-based IBAT represents more than 2,000 independent banks and branches in 700 Texas communities.
